I’m so excited to introduce you to Christian. Christian has been on my radar for a while- not only is he driven, inspiring and motivating, he also is a really, really nice guy! This interview is a reminder that even if you’ve suffered injury and ‘fallen down’, you have it in you to rise above, be strong, and overcome any obstacle.
As told to VH team member, Olivia
“I met Christian at the Melbourne ‘Bears not Babes’ event along with Melissa Ambrosini back in July this year. It is hard not to have that fire ignited within you when in the presence of this ever- inspiring duo. They have such a passion for life and all things health. They also live and breath the concept of ‘self- love’, which is an incredible notion and something that we all should learn to embrace and practice.
We have the pleasure of having Christian sharing some his insights for you, our lovely Vegie Heads.”
What were you doing before One Personal Training Solutions? What inspired/instigated your big career change? Why did you start your own business?
I was a competitive swimmer, putting all of my time and energy into training, whilst doing jobs such as swimming coaching and green keeping to pay the bills. When I injured my back in a serious boating accident and could no longer swim anymore, I put that time and energy into a new career and haven’t looked back since! As my PT business grew and developed I noticed skills and personality traits in other friends that would be maximised in PT so recruited and developed them as trainers – this started my Personal Training business and I now manage a team of 10 trainers with plans to open up other gyms all over the country.
What were some of the challenges you faced when you first jumped off the cliff to chase your new direction (in terms of One Personal Training Solutions)?
My second back injury, falling flat on my back from 2.5m onto a concrete slab is about as close as you can get to ‘jumping off the cliff’. This resulted in being in a wheelchair yet provided me with a huge wake up call as to what is really important in life – where best to dedicate my time and energy and what it was that actually results in my success to date.
How has the move changed your life?
Despite being brought on through perceived negative experiences in the form of injuries, I am grateful for the lessons these things have taught me. It’s given me a more realistic perspective on life and one that I apply daily to ensure I’m delivering the best possible service in all areas of my business. Being able to call ‘managing relationships’ my work – hanging out with some amazing people and working alongside my best friends – I can’t complain with that!
Advice for others contemplating the move?
Something my Dad said to me was perhaps the greatest advice I’ve had so far: ‘It wouldn’t hurt you to fall on your arse once in a while’. So whilst its great to achieve good things and be proud, it’s not until you experience a real set back that you appreciate what you have and the adversity required to get through it to take you to another level. Get out of your comfort zone – that’s where you’ll find the power to make the necessary changes in your life!
What do you like most about your Profession?
Identifying what it is that makes people tick – how do they get motivated, what experiences have they been through that make them who they are, what are they capable of – coaching them through this and seeing the success achieved once it all comes together, there’s nothing more satisfying!
How long have you been doing this?
About 7 years now. Owning and operating ONE PTS for the past 3 years.
Who are 3 people in your life that have influenced and inspired you the most?
My Dad Leigh, my Chiropractor/Osteopath and good friend Kay MacPherson, and my old Swimming Coach Rod Furlong.
If you were stranded on a desert island, what three items would you take with you?
A knife, tarpaulin and a rope
What else would you be if you weren’t a PT?
I’d be a Swimming Coach and Swim School Owner, Sports Psychologist, Strength and Conditioning Coach
What would be the first thing you would do if today was your last day?
Organise a party with everyone I care about, making sure to get around and tell them all how I feel about them.
What’s your own definition of happiness?
Doing what you want in life with good health
What were your dreams as a child?
To be an elite athlete
How/where do you see yourself/your work in next 3/5 years from now?
Still doing what I love, managing ONE Personal Training Solutions Gyms and Trainers all over the country and an Online Personal Training Program world wide.
What is your favourite holiday spot/food/gadget?
Bendalong, a beautiful spot on the south coast of Sydney. My uncle has had a holiday place there for years and it’s one place I go to when I really want to relax and unwind: surfing, fishing, camp fires, bbq’s, fresh air, one corner store and few people, I love it!
