In this episode of Vegie Head TV, I have a chat about the rest of my journey – including how I feel about following a vegan/plant based diet, and the biggest shifts I’ve experienced.
A word: We are all on a journey. One with many twists and turns. Sometimes we have to backtrack a little to move forward. Sometimes we stay stuck in one place, feet rooted in- scared to go ahead but too stubborn to go back. We meet others along the way- some of them foes, but most of them friends. Likely to encourage, engage and even begin walking that path with you.
Start somewhere, make small shifts and they’ll be lifelong ones!
In it, I talk about three reasons why most people will shift to a plant based diet, what makes it easy, and how you can start!
An exceprt from the Vegie Head Complete Guidebook
When I began my plant based journey at 15, it was a very simple transition. I was never a huge meat eater. I grew up in a family where thankfully, my parents were amazing cooks and were always making us delicious food (and for me, sans meat). It was never an issue. I never felt pressured. I was never teased or judged. It was just simply accepted.
I know not everybody is that lucky.
I’m contacted daily by concerned parents who fear their child will ‘miss out’, by teenagers who really want to ‘go vegan’ but they’re scared of what their parents will say, by wives who are vegetarian but their husbands and kids eat meat, and most heartbreakingly, by those who’ve been teased, judged, bullied, all for their choices to live a more compassionate life.
For almost a decade, I’ve been ‘Vegie Head’. I’ve been the go-to for delicious plant based recipes the whole family will love. The go-to for the non-judgemental advice, the home of happy inspiration and relatable stories.
But I’ve felt a big pull. A shift. The desire for me to educate has always been there- and I’m not going to do it with graphic images or fear based messaging. I’m going to educate how I always have- with love.
I’ve been attacked online, called names, been belittled and questioned – I’m sad to say, at the hands of many vegans. I’ve seen others be attacked, called names, belittled and questioned as well, the same groups and circles. And it’s sad.
We’re trying to make the world a better place; by eating less meat, helping the environment and changing our lifestyles and choices. Yet we cut each other down, and the elitism that comes with the ‘vegan label’ is something that we need to quash.
There is no one better than another. There is no right or wrong. There is only choice, love, and fear.
So let’s change the conversation.
