An Honest Review of 5 Vegan Protein Powders to Support Your Healthy Lifestyle

Over the years I’ve tried many, many plant based vegan and raw protein powders. We’re so lucky that now there is such an abundance of vegan protein powders that there really is one for everybody and every body. I’ve tried over the years to find one that doesn’t affect my stomach, cools me down too much, and doesn’t leave any nasty after tastes. Here are five that I’ve tried and enjoyed… some more than others!

Food Matters Superfood Protein

What they say

“When we created this blend, we wanted to make sure that it was loaded with highly-digestible nutrients and still tasted great, without compromising on the ingredients!

Our aim was to develop the cleanest, most naturally delicious protein available – and we succeeded!”

What I say

This is, without a doubt, one of the BEST protein powders I’ve ever tried. I’ve bought it repeatedly ever since trying it when it first hit the shelves. It’s been the only protein powder that hasn’t had my stomach in cramps, and has such a mild taste that it works well with any fruit or flavour you’d like to add. It’s got a very fine texture, so does work well in bliss balls – but I haven’t attempted to bake with it just yet.

What I say

This has only just become available in Australia as far as I know. I was sent a small sample of it and it wasn’t bad. The stevia does leave a slight taste in your mouth so be sure to use other ingredients to mask the flavour if it bothers you.

Nutritional Information

Vital Protein Powder

What they say

“It contains over 18 amino acids, matching the profile of whey proteins which is unique for a vegetable protein The protein is extracted from the highest quality European golden peas. This complete protein digests easily without causing bloating.

A balanced source of protein provides the basic building blocks of many functions in the body. Amino acids are used by the body for enzyme and hormone production, muscle repaid & building, liver detoxification and immune cell production. Deficiencies in amino acids are linked to unstable blood sugar levels, low mood, water retention and fat storage.”

What I say

This was one of the first pea proteins to hit the market- and what a revelation it was! The only thing- the dreaded cramps, along with lots of trips to the bathroom made this a not so pleasant experience. I found that if I had small amounts every other day I was fine. Taste wise? Great. Who doesn’t love chocolate?

Nutritional Information

Hemp Foods Hemp Protein

What they say

“Our high quality protein is made in Australia, using NO heat or chemicals (some of the Canadian hemp protein uses heat and/ or chemical process). Our process is a complicated mechanical process that ensures you get as much protein as possible in the most natural way.”

What I say

I’m a huge lover of hemp seeds in anything- and this is no exception. They’re Australian grown hemp seeds- so food miles are low, and I’ve found with hemp seeds that are imported, that they can be quite bitter. Store this in the fridge and enjoy!

Nutritional Information

Sunwarrior Raw Vegan Protein Powder

What they say

“Sunwarrior Classic Protein uses an old world process, combining the endosperm and bran from raw sprouted whole grain brown rice, to create the first completely hypoallergenic protein, containing all essential and non-essential amino acids in a perfectly balanced profile. Sunwarrior Classic Protein has the highest amount of (non soy) raw, whole-grain sprouted, vegan protein of any product available.”

What I say

Probably the most recognised vegan protein powder (it’s now sold in major supermarkets) this was another one to hit the shelves early on. I did enjoy this on and off, but couldn’t consume it too regularly- being raw it was too cooling on my stomach and had me heading to the toilets a little too much. Taste wise- it’s very plain, so lends itself well to other smoothie flavours.

Nutritional Information

Overall?

Go with your gut- literally! If something doesn’t feel right, there’s usually a reason for it. I’ve given away barely touched tubs of powder to friends and family- purely because I know that it’ll only just sit in my pantry and take up space.
